With its playful name you might expect Lawrence’s Chien et Chat to be equally light and frilly – but it’s not so. This single-movement showpiece is a ridiculous – yet aggressively driven – agitato perpetuo, mostly in 7/8, filled with some of the most effective writing you’ll find in such a meter. All three instruments are equally showy, each handing off the rhythmic ostinatos, offbeat melodies, and flourishes in quick succession. Accessible, intense, and exciting.
