Company History

The Carolyn Nussbaum Music Company was founded in 1996 in Dallas, TX. Today, our 3500 sq. ft. retail, repair and distribution center continues to grow and prosper in the Dallas/Ft. Worth Metroplex where top professional flutists frequent. Our in-house staff members, a majority of whom are flutists, are able to offer an unparalleled level of knowledge and service to our customers.

Qualifications

Carolyn Nussbaum, flutist, received her Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Music degrees from the University of Houston, where she studied flute with Byron Hester. At the University of North Texas she completed an Master of Arts degree in flute, studying under Jacqueline Hofto and Kathy Chastain, and also finished her thesis on the mechanical development of the modern flute under Dr. Mary Karen Clardy. Ms. Nussbaum pursued her interest in flute making and repair over a two and a half year period, studying under such flute makers as Chris McKenna, one of the top flute repair professionals and piccolo makers in the country. Having successfully completed technical training at Verne Q. Powell Flutes in Waltham, MA she has been repairing instruments since 1994 and started the Carolyn Nussbaum Music Company in 1996. Ms. Nussbaum is authorized to repair all major brands of flutes including, Jupiter, Gemeinhardt, Yamaha, Sankyo, Trevor James, Williams, Brannen, Miyazawa, Burkart, Altus, Muramatsu, Powell, Hammig, and many more.

Mary Lyons, flutist, received her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Advertising Art from the University of North Texas in 1994 and went on to receive her Master of Arts in Music with a concentration in Flute Pedagogy from Texas Womens University in 2006 while studying under Dr. Pam Youngblood. Ms. Lyons has been performing with the Brookhaven Flute Choir since 2002 and Flutes of the Spirit Flute Choir since 2001. Ms. Lyons joined the Carolyn Nussbaum Music Company in 2003 and maintains a studio for private instruction of students of all ages.

Darcie Fleming, flutist, received her Bachelor of the Arts degree in Flute Performance from Oklahoma State University in 2014 studying under Dr. Virginia Broffitt Kunzer. After receiving her undergraduate degree, Ms. Fleming began teaching private flute lessons and ensemble classes at Music Suite 408 in Peru, Illinois and playing second flute in the Illinois Valley Symphony Orchestra. Ms. Fleming joined the faculty of the Annual Summer Flute Retreat in Peru, Illinois in 2013, and remains an active faculty member. Ms. Fleming joined the Carolyn Nussbaum Music Company in 2015 and maintains a studio for private flute instruction to students of all ages. She currently plays piccolo and second flute in The New Life Symphony Orchestra in Richardson, TX.

Chelsey Fields, flutist, received her Bachelor of Music Education degree from New Mexico State University in 2008 studying under Dr. Lisa Van Winkle. After receiving her undergraduate degree, Ms. Fields worked as an intern with the Carolyn Nussbaum Music Company before obtaining her Associates Degree in Band Instrument Repair Technology from Renton Technical College in 2009. Ms. Fields now manages the repair shop and works as a flute repair specialist at the Carolyn Nussbaum Music Company. In the summer of 2015, Ms. Fields became an authorized and licensed service technician for Muramatsu flutes.

Duane Hewson received his Associates Degree in Musical Instrument Repair from Western Iowa Technical Community College in 1994 after having spent 17 years as a Model/Instrument Maker in the medical, scientific and aerospace industries. Mr. Hewson then moved to Austin Texas where he worked as an instrument repair technician for major instrument retailers until 2008 when he joined instrument manufacturer, KHS America. While at KHS, Mr. Hewson was responsible for set-up and adjustment of all new Altus and Azumi flutes, new Jupiter woodwinds, as well as the maintenance and repair of all flutes for the KHS Altus Artist Program. Mr. Hewson is certified in the David Straubinger flute pad program, is a member of the National Association of Professional Band Instrument Repair Technicians (NAPBIRT) and has hosted repair clinics at the NAPBIRT Annual Repair Conferences and local association events in Nashville, TN. In October 2012, Mr Hewson moved to Plano TX and joined the repair and maintenance staff of the Carolyn Nussbaum Music Company.

Simon Berry, flutist, is one of the most active archival researchers of flute music in the United States. Simon studied flute with Karla Flygare and Claudia Anderson while working in contemporary and popular music composition and production, as well as pursuing extensive research on the neurological consequences of aural stimulation, before coming to work for Carolyn Nussbaum in Spring 2015. Mr. Berry has edited a variety of textbooks and educational materials, among them Bonnie Blanchard’s Music for Life series, and has served as an independent editorial advisor for several private companies. Outside of music, he enjoys photography and designing contemporary origami.
