Description
The first of the three sonatas by J.S. Bach for viola da gamba and obbligato harpsichord in G major (BWV 1027) is identical to the Trio Sonata for two flutes and Continuo (BWV 1039) in the same key. This setting is considered the older and may have served as the model for Bach’s gamba arrangement. In his book ‘Studien uber J.S. Bachs Sonaten for ein Melodieinstrument und ein obligates Cembalo,’ Hans Eppstein comes to the convincing conclusion that the other two gamba sonatas (D major and G minor) do not represent original settings, but rather go back to earlier models – most likely to Trio Sonatas with 2 melody instruments and general bass. This edition represents the reconstruction of these sonatas for 2 flutes and basso continuo.
