Description
The compositional starting point for each movement of Christopher Redgate’s Three Folk Songs is a traditional folksong, as the name suggestions. However, the song is only the starting point; each undergoes some transformation.
Barbara Ellen is transformed by a number of changes of time signature and some ornamentation, with a brief cadenza for flute. Green Bushes begins with a slow melodic line derived from the song, then grows into a frenetic 5/4. The Wraggle Taggle Gypsies states the melody then moves into a set of variations in the manner of a 19th century virtuosic work.
