Description

Marcel Labey’s Cantilene, for four flutes, is a single-movement yet expansive showpiece that never goes beyond the bounds of good taste.

While the Cantilene lasts a mere 4’30, it more than makes up for it in scale; it varies between a grande classical entrance (Beethoven filtered through French sensibilities), quasi-cadenzas moving between flutes, and flowing semi-impressionist and multitextured melodies. A gorgeous encore piece or an engaging smaller recital work.
