Description
Thorsteinn Hauksson presents Cho, for flute and computer sounds.
From the composer:
‘The inspiration for Cho comes from the well-known Greek myth about the hopeless love of the mountain nymph Echo for Narcissus, whose sole interest was in his own image. This causes Echo (who is under the spell of only being able to repeat the last words of another) to fade away in sorrow to a voice only, turning into a stone.
This work is for flute and computer sounds that are based on the natural echo of the flute. All of the processed flute sounds are based on a digital recording in a church in Reykjavik – Kristskirkja, a Catholic church built in the neo-gothic style. Its exceptionally beautiful reverberation was then used as the main material for the computer processing of the sounds.
I hope that our ill-fated mountain nymph Echo will forgive me for using her voice in such a manner, and therefor it goes without saying that no artificial echoes of any kind were used for the computer sounds part of the piece.
Duration: 10′. For advanced players.
