Vermont Counterpoint is not one of Steve Reich’s better known pieces. It is, however, a very interesting and indicative part of his oeuvre. It has many similarities to the earlier phase works on tape such as Come Out and instrumental works such as Piano Phase and Violin Phase. At the same time it also has characteristics of his later, more polished, accessible works.

It is usually performed by one live flutist with a pre-recorded backing track of up to 11 flutes, piccolos and alto flutes. It can also be performed by 12 live flutists.
