Description
Only a few chamber music works by Wilhelm Friedemann Bach have survived. The discovery of two flute sonatas (each with three movements in the tempo sequence fast-slow-fast), which were recently identified in the anonymous collection of the Staatsbibliothek in Berlin, is therefore all the more welcome. Despite having been handed down anonymously, they are both clearly authentic compositions of W. F. Bach, specifically from his time in Dresden (1733-1746). More virtuosic than the flute sonatas of his brother Carl Philipp Emanuel, they document the high standards of the Dresden flute school, which are exemplified by the legendary abilities of flautists like Pierre-Gabriel Buffardin.
In this collection are the Sonata in E minor and the Sonata in F major, both recovered from the Staatsbibliothek in Berlin.
